MATCHDAY 8 RECAP: Four More Teams Secure Knockout Stage Spots on a Night Dominated by MLS Clubs

The MLS won five out of the seven games on Wednesday to take control of the overall leagues standings by a tight margin, 25 wins for MLS clubs vs 24 wins for the Liga MX. With Wednesday's results the Sounders, Inter Miami, Pachuca, and Tigres assured their spots in the Quarterfinals.

Inter Miami was without Lionel Messi and conceded an early goal to Pumas but charged back on the backs of Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suárez to clinch a spot in the Knockout Stages for the third straight year.

Orlando City got a hat trick from Luis Muriel and a brace from Martín Ojeda in a lopsided 5-1 win over Necaxa to put them in position to advance.

The Sounders closed the night with a comeback win of their own to conclude a perfect Phase One and head into the Quarterfinals as the no. 1 overall team in Leagues Cup 2025.

ORLANDO CITY 5, NECAXA 1

The objective was simple for Orlando City: win in regulation, secure all three points, and score as many goals as possible. Mission accomplished—and in emphatic fashion. The Lions delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over Club Necaxa at Inter & Co Stadium, sealing their place atop the group with a +6 goal differential and solidifying their spot among the top four teams in the Leagues Cup standings.

As for Necaxa, their Leagues Cup campaign ends with four points and official elimination. Despite flashes of promise, the Liga MX side fell short of advancing in a highly competitive Phase One.

INTER MIAMI 3, PUMAS UNAM 1

No Lionel Messi? No problem for Inter Miami CF, who rallied from a goal down to defeat Pumas UNAM 3-1 in a thrilling Leagues Cup showdown at Chase Stadium. With the result, the MLS side clinches a spot in the Knockout Stage, while Pumas exits the tournament despite a valiant effort.

ATLANTA UNITED 4, ATLAS 1

Atlanta United salvaged a confidence boost from their Phase One finale with the club’s first victory in tournament history, smashing Atlas 4-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night to conclude their Leagues Cup 2025 outing.

With no result sufficient to see the Five Stripes reach the knockout stages, a 4-1 demolition of former manager Gonzalo Pineda’s Atlas to close their Leagues Cup 2025 campaign was about as good an ending as Atlanta could’ve hoped for—and they got it done.

ATLÉTICO SAN LUIS 2, MINNESOTA UNITED 0

Atlético de San Luis said goodbye to Leagues Cup 2025 by earning its first win of three points in tournament history with a 2–0 victory over Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Fresh off their first win in the competition—a penalty shootout triumph at Real Salt Lake—San Luis secured its first outright victory in regulation. The Potosinos finish with five points, marking their best showing in any edition of the tournament.

Minnesota United will also exit the competition, missing an opportunity to win at home and secure a spot in the Knockout Stage.

CLUB AMÉRICA 1 (5), PORTLAND 1 (3)

Pride was on the line, and Club América didn’t want to bow out quietly. Despite not losing a single match in regulation, Las Águilas won’t be flying any further in Leagues Cup 2025. América finishes Phase One with five points and, for the first time in tournament history, fails to reach the Knockout Stage.

Even with the penalty loss, Portland remains in a Knockout Stage position but can only wait and hope as other results roll in.

REAL SALT LAKE 1, QUERÉTARO 0

Real Salt Lake took three points in their final match of Leagues Cup 2025 with a narrow 1-0 victory over Querétaro at America First Field on Wednesday night, exiting the tournament after Phase One.

Braian Ojeda scored the lone goal in the second half to give Real Salt Lake their first outright win of Leagues Cup 2025, as they depart the tournament without a regulation loss.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS 2, CLUB TIJUANA 1

It was another nail-biter in Leagues Cup action—but the Seattle Sounders FC won’t be complaining. With a dramatic 2–1 comeback win over Club Tijuana at Lumen Field, the Sounders not only punched their ticket to the Knockout Stage, but did so as the top overall seed in the tournament. Meanwhile, the loss eliminates the Liga MX side, despite a valiant showing.
