We knew it had the makings of a classic, and neither team disappointed as LAFC defeated Chivas de Guadalajara in a dramatic penalty shootout after the clubs played to a 1-1 draw in their first-ever meeting at BMO Stadium.
It was a battle both on the pitch and in the stands. Chivas supporters turned out in full force, matching the energy of the home crowd and creating a memorable atmosphere for one of the marquee matchups of the opening phase.
The first half lived up to the hype as both teams traded chances and their biggest stars stepped into the spotlight. Denis Bouanga sent the first warning in the 19th minute, sprinting behind the Guadalajara back line to latch onto a long ball, but he failed to make clean contact and the chance went begging. Four minutes later, the Gabon international tested Raúl Rangel with a powerful strike from distance that the Chivas goalkeeper handled comfortably.
The third opportunity proved to be the charm. In the 38th minute, David Martínez split two defenders with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Bouanga to fire a right-footed shot across goal and into the far corner to give LAFC a deserved lead.
Chivas, however, refused to back down. After controlling more of the possession as the half progressed, the Liga MX side found its equalizer just before halftime. Bryan González delivered a superb through ball to Roberto "Piojo" Alvarado, who calmly finished with his left foot, sending his shot in off the post to level the score.
The second half belonged largely to the visitors. Efraín Álvarez came close on two occasions with long-range efforts that sailed just over the crossbar before being substituted. Moments later, Fernando González unleashed a thunderous strike that rattled the woodwork, giving LAFC a major scare as the match remained deadlocked.
Although Son Heung-min had a relatively quiet evening, he nearly delivered the winner in the 80th minute. His curling free kick from just outside the penalty area was destined for the top corner before Rangel produced another outstanding save to push the ball away for a corner. Chivas had one final opportunity to avoid penalties in the 88th minute, but Thomas Hasal came up with another crucial stop, denying Alvarado's header to send the match to a shootout.
The penalties proved just as dramatic. Kevin Castañeda opened the shootout by sending his attempt wide, allowing Bouanga to convert LAFC's first kick despite Rangel getting a hand to the ball. Ricardo Marín equalized before Tyler Boyd restored LAFC's advantage, but Alvarado answered for Chivas after Marky Delgado fired over the crossbar.
Both teams remained perfect from that point forward. Brian Gutiérrez, Mathieu Choinière, Luis Gabriel Rey, and Ryan Porteous all converted to force sudden death.
In the decisive moment, Thomas Hasal became the hero for LAFC, diving to his left to deny Luis Romo's penalty. Jude Terry then stepped up and calmly buried the winning kick into the upper-right corner, sealing a 5-4 shootout victory and the extra point for the Black & Gold.
