Toluca made its chances count, and Monterrey paid the price for failing to do the same. The Diablos beat Rayados 2-0 in the 2026 Leagues Cup Final at Shell Energy Stadium, weathering long stretches of pressure before putting the game away on the counter.
The Final had barely started when Federico Pereira was booked after just eight seconds for catching Lucas Ocampos with his forearm. The challenge drew an early yellow card and could have resulted in a straight red.
Monterrey settled quickly and created the first opening in the third minute. Hugo Cuypers met an Ocampos cross but headed just wide of the left post.
Toluca needed only a few minutes to make its opportunity count. Federico Viñas hit the post, and the rebound dropped into the six-yard box with Esteban Andrada on the ground. Orbelín Pineda could not get the ball under control, and Alexis Vega reacted first, finishing into the open net.
Rayados nearly had an immediate response. Ocampos found space inside the box and sent a low shot toward goal, but Hugo González got down to make the save.
Monterrey then had a potential penalty appeal when Cuypers went down inside the Toluca box. The referee waved play on, and VAR did not intervene.
Rayados kept coming. In the 31st minute, Ricardo Chávez rose to meet a Gerardo Arteaga cross from close range, only for González to make a one-handed save. Five minutes before the break, Everardo López stepped in at the right moment to cut out a Diego Rossi cross intended for Cuypers in front of goal.
Monterrey had created more of the danger, but Toluca went into halftime with the lead.
The pattern continued after the break. Monterrey saw more of the ball and tried to stretch Toluca with crosses, long passes and quick circulation. The Diablos stayed compact, absorbed the pressure and waited for opportunities to break forward.
That patience paid off with 20 minutes remaining.
Franco Romero found space from behind midfield and carried the ball forward before releasing Federico Viñas down the left. Viñas drove into the box and forced Andrada into another save, but the rebound fell perfectly for Helinho, who finished with his left foot to make it 2-0.
Toluca almost put the match beyond doubt moments later. Jorge Díaz Price worked his way past Andrada with several fakes, but his final effort struck the post.
Monterrey refused to stop pushing. Ocampos headed a Jesús Corona corner wide in the 82nd minute, and Luca Orellano sent a free kick over the bar five minutes later.
Rayados brought on Iker Fimbres and Fidel Ambríz late in an attempt to change the game, but Toluca held firm. Six minutes of stoppage time came and went without a late twist.
The final whistle sealed a 2-0 victory and another trophy for Toluca. Monterrey generated more attempts, but the Diablos were sharper in the decisive moments, putting five shots on target and turning their opportunities into goals while refusing to give Rayados a way back into the match.
