While Canada, Mexico and the United States all saw their tournament journeys conclude in the Round of 16, the 2026 FIFA World Cup marked a significant step forward for soccer across North America. Historic victories, breakthrough performances and unforgettable moments captivated home crowds throughout the tournament, while many of the region's top stars now prepare to bring that same momentum back to their clubs for Leagues Cup.

With the World Cup entering the quarterfinals, the spotlight now shifts toward the next major competition on the North American soccer calendar.

CANADA: A TOURNAMENT TO REMEMBER

No co-host nation surpassed expectations more than Canada.

Under Jesse Marsch, the Canadians reached the Round of 16 for the first time in program history after defeating South Africa in dramatic fashion thanks to Stephen Eustáquio's stoppage-time winner. It was a landmark achievement for a nation that had never previously advanced beyond the group stage.

Although Canada's tournament came to an end against Morocco, the World Cup served as a coming-out party for one of the tournament's biggest surprises.

LAFC midfielder Stephen Eustáquio established himself as one of the best midfielders in the competition, leading Canada in touches, passes and crosses while scoring the biggest goal in the country's World Cup history. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau (Orlando City SC) also produced several outstanding performances, while Jacob Shaffelburg and Mathieu Choinière (LAFC), Joel Waterman (Chicago Fire FC), Jayden Nelson (Austin FC) and Dayne St. Clair (Inter Miami CF) all gained invaluable experience that they now bring into Leagues Cup.

Canada may have fallen short of the quarterfinals, but its World Cup proved that the country's golden generation is only beginning to write its story.

MEXICO: A HISTORIC STEP FORWARD

Mexico's tournament ended against England, but not before writing one of the country's most memorable World Cup chapters in decades.

After advancing from the group stage without conceding a goal, El Tri defeated Ecuador 2-0 to earn its first World Cup knockout-stage victory since the 1986 tournament. Remarkably, that historic victory also came at Estadio Banorte by the exact same scoreline as Mexico's famous Round of 16 victory over Bulgaria forty years earlier.

Chivas standouts Roberto Alvarado and Raúl Rangel emerged among Mexico's biggest revelations throughout the tournament. Alvarado consistently created chances and helped drive the attack, while Rangel started every World Cup match and led a defense that went four consecutive games without conceding before England finally found the breakthrough in the Round of 16.

Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez also played important roles throughout Mexico's impressive run, while the tournament further demonstrated the quality and depth of mexican talent competing on the international stage.

Now those same players return to their clubs carrying the confidence of one of Mexico's strongest World Cup performances in recent memory—and with another trophy firmly in their sights.

UNITED STATES: BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

The United States once again showed that it belongs among the world's top competitors, even if its World Cup journey ended earlier than it had hoped.

After advancing to the Round of 16 with a victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Americans ran into a clinical Belgium side that capitalized on its opportunities in a convincing 4-1 victory. Despite entering the match with Folarin Balogun available after his red card was rescinded, the United States struggled to contain Belgium's attack as its World Cup run came to an end.

Even in defeat, several MLS players enjoyed outstanding tournaments. Charlotte FC captain Tim Ream once again provided veteran leadership throughout the competition, while New York City FC goalkeeper Matt Freese emerged as one of the breakout performers of the tournament after establishing himself as the United States' first-choice goalkeeper.

Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Chris Brady (Chicago Fire FC), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC), Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati), Matt Turner (New England Revolution) and Alejandro Zendejas (Club América) also played meaningful roles, gaining valuable experience against the world's best competition.

While the Round of 16 result was disappointing, the tournament reinforced the growing influence of MLS and Liga MX talent on the international stage and provided another important building block for the next generation of American players.

THE NEXT CHAPTER BEGINS

While the World Cup continues without its three host nations, many of the tournament's most recognizable faces are preparing for the next challenge.

In just a few weeks, teammates who shared locker rooms during the World Cup will become rivals once again as Leagues Cup reunites the best of MLS and Liga MX. World Cup stars like Lionel Messi, Roberto Alvarado, Raúl Rangel, Stephen Eustáquio, Tim Ream, Camilo Vargas, Son Heung-min, James Rodríguez, Robert Lewandowski and dozens of other international standouts will shift their focus from representing their countries to chasing club silverware.

For Canada, Mexico and the United States, the World Cup created memories that will last a lifetime. Historic performances helped inspire a new generation of supporters across North America, and now many of those same players return to their clubs with another championship opportunity immediately in front of them.

The next opportunity to lift a trophy begins August 4.
