The opening matchday of Leagues Cup 2026 is in the books and it had a little bit of everything.
Fans were treated to spectacular goals, dramatic momentum swings, weather delays and statement performances as MLS and Liga MX clubs officially kicked off another summer of cross-border competition. By night's end, the tournament had already showcased exactly why Leagues Cup has become one of North America's premier soccer events.
With every point carrying enormous significance in Phase One, several clubs wasted no time making their intentions clear. Columbus, Cincinnati and Charlotte opened with convincing victories over Liga MX opposition, while Juárez spoiled Minnesota United's home opener by earning one of the night's biggest road results
Cincinnati 3 vs Pachuca 1
Evander entered the 2026 Leagues Cup as one of the favorites for MLS MVP and he's already showing out vs Liga MX opposition. Evander scored Cincinnati's first goal with a stellar shot from outside the box to set the tone for Orange and Blue's offense. The 28-year-old midfielder has now scored in each of the last three Leagues Cup openers (2023 was with Portland) and remains undefeated.
As has been the case in recent months, Cincinnati conceded an early goal and once again failed to keep a clean sheet. But Cincinnati responded with character, rallied from behind, and delivered an impressive performance in front of its home fans.
Columbus 3 vs Atlas 1
Despite fielding a rotated squad, Columbus Crew controlled possession for much of the match, creating danger down the flanks and consistently delivering dangerous crosses into Atlas' penalty area.
The hosts capitalized on two first-half set pieces to seize control. Ruvalcaba opened the scoring with a header from a Dylan Chambost corner kick before Columbus struck again in first-half stoppage time. This time, Steven Moreira's side took advantage of another corner as Sean Zawadzki powered home a diving header following a delivery from Taha Habroune, who was instrumental in controlling the Crew's midfield throughout the evening.
Charlotte 3 vs Pumas 0
A rainy night did little to dampen Charlotte FC's Leagues Cup opener as the hosts, despite a weather delay of 1 hour and 22 minutes, stormed to a 3-0 victory over Pumas UNAM on Tuesday at Bank of America Stadium.
Brandt Bronico opened the scoring in the 27th minute, calmly finishing from close range and Charlotte would add to the lead after the halftime break on a Archie Goodwin header in the 50th minute. Tyger Smalls converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute to cap Charlotte's dominant performance and seal all three points.
FC Juárez 2 vs Minnesota United 1
Under new interim manager Salvador Valero, FC Juárez looked like a different team under the lights at Allianz Field, pulling off one of the biggest upsets of Matchday 1 with a 2-1 victory over heavily favored Minnesota United FC.
Minnesota pushed forward throughout the second half in search of another equalizer, but Juárez defended with discipline and composure to protect its lead.
Tigres UANL 1 (6) vs Real Salt Lake 1 (5)
The Leagues Cup Matchday 1 clash between Tigres UANL and Real Salt Lake did not disappoint. The Mexican side drew 1-1 against the MLS team in regulation and claimed the extra point with a 6-5 victory in the penalty shootout.
Tigres took the lead early with a goal from Juan Brunetta in the sixth minute, but Real Salt Lake equalized thanks to Pablo Ruiz before halftime, sending the match to penalties. From the spot, Tigres proved more clinical, converting all six of its penalties before Zach Booth's miss in the sixth round handed the Liga MX side the extra point.
Atlante 1 vs Vancouver Whitecaps 0
Atlante enjoyed a dream start to its first-ever Leagues Cup campaign, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 at BC Place behind another match-winning performance from Ecuadorian forward Jhojan Julio. The result earned Miguel Herrera's side three valuable points and extended its impressive run of form across all competitions.
The victory gives Atlante early momentum heading into Saturday's road match against Real Salt Lake, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC will need a positive result in their next Phase One fixture to keep their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.
