Atlante enjoyed a dream start to its first-ever Leagues Cup campaign, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 at BC Place behind another match-winning performance from Ecuadorian forward Jhojan Julio. The result earned Miguel Herrera's side three valuable points and extended its impressive run of form across all competitions.
Fresh off scoring the winner against Cruz Azul in Liga MX last Saturday, Julio once again proved to be Atlante's difference-maker. The Ecuadorian broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, calmly finishing inside the box after the visitors pieced together one of their best attacking moves of the opening half.
Atlante nearly took the lead earlier when Luis Puente found himself through on goal, but Vancouver goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer rushed off his line to make an outstanding save. The Whitecaps responded with a dangerous effort from Rayan Elloumi that drifted narrowly wide before Julio finally gave the visitors the lead just before halftime.
Vancouver came out aggressively after the break, making three halftime substitutions before introducing Thomas Müller in the 64th minute for his Leagues Cup debut. The Whitecaps dominated possession throughout the second half, finishing with 69 percent of the ball, 614 passes, and eight corner kicks, but Atlante remained compact defensively and never relinquished its advantage.
Goalkeeper Óscar Jiménez was instrumental in preserving the lead. The veteran made four saves, including a pair of outstanding stops on Emmanuel Sabbi early in the second half, to keep Vancouver off the scoresheet. Atlante nearly doubled its advantage late in the match when Julio came close to completing his brace, only for Boehmer to deny his powerful header.
Despite seeing just 31 percent of possession, Atlante created the more dangerous scoring opportunities and made the most of them, securing a memorable victory in the club's Leagues Cup debut.
The victory gives Atlante early momentum heading into Saturday's road match against Real Salt Lake, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC will need a positive result in their next Phase One fixture to keep their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.
