León faced Toluca with a place in the Final on the line and knowing that a victory would also secure a spot in the Concacaf Champions Cup, while the Diablos Rojos looked to extend their winning streak and continue their recent success.
Toluca controlled possession, but León started the match by finding spaces in the Diablos Rojos defense. La Fiera struggled to turn those openings into clear chances, however, with Toluca repeatedly shutting down the final pass. Antonio Mohamed’s side eventually created the most dangerous opportunity of the half, forcing Óscar García into a key save to keep the match scoreless.
As the first half was coming to an end, García failed to clear a corner kick that fell to Federico Pereira outside the box. The defender fired a powerful shot into the net to give Toluca the lead just before halftime.
León continued to struggle in attack early in the second half against the tournament’s best defense among Liga MX teams. Toluca then found space on the counterattack in the 68th minute, with Jorge Díaz Price combining with Federico Viñas on a one-two before setting up the forward to double the lead. Viñas apologized to the León supporters during his celebration due to his past with the club.
With La Fiera two goals down, Jhohan Romaña was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for arguing with the referee, leaving his side with 10 men and making a comeback even more difficult. Toluca came close to adding a third in the closing stages, creating multiple chances in one remarkable sequence before also having a goal ruled out for offside. Bruno Méndez was then sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 88th minute.
Toluca advances to the Leagues Cup Final, where it will face the winner of América vs. Monterrey. León, meanwhile, will have another opportunity to secure its place in the Concacaf Champions Cup by winning the Third Place Match.
