MATCH RECAP: Houston Dynamo handles Real Salt Lake to secure place in knockout round

The Houston Dynamo surged into the knockout stages of the Leagues Cup with a resounding 3-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in their final Group Stage match in West 8. With this triumph, Houston not only sealed their advancement but also secured the top spot in the group, thus avoiding a daunting clash with Club América and instead preparing to host Deportivo Toluca F.C. at Shell Energy Stadium on August 9th.

“We know what they are doing, they know what we are doing...that's why these games go down to who makes the plays and tonight we made those plays.” said Houston head coach Ben Olsen.

RSL entered the match in control of their destiny but left the pitch eliminated, a stark contrast to their previous tournament performance where they reached the Round of 16. This disappointing exit raises questions about how different the outcome might have been had Colombian forward Cristian "Chicho" Arango been available for the entire tournament. Despite his late appearance in the match, Arango couldn’t alter the course of the game.

Dynamo's Hector Herrera was instrumental in the team’s success, setting the tone early with a pivotal role in each of their three goals. The Dynamo’s intent was clear from the start, and it took only minutes for them to open the scoring. Herrera’s long-range strike, which was redirected by a defender, found the back of the net, giving Houston the early advantage they needed.

“[Hector Herrera] brought what he brings everytime he steps on the field, leadership calmness...he’s just a winner...we go as far as Hector goes.” praised Olsen.

The momentum continued as Herrera showcased his playmaking skills, delivering a perfect ball into the box that Micael met with a powerful header, doubling Houston’s lead. The Dynamo faithful at Shell Energy Stadium erupted in the plus 90 degree weather, sensing a memorable night ahead already before half time.

New signing Ezequiel Ponce then added to the Dynamo's tally, scoring his first goal for the club and effectively sealing the game before halftime. Ponce’s goal, Houston’s third, sent the stadium into a frenzy and assured the Dynamo of their group-winning status, as they needed to win by at least two goals to top the group.

As the match progressed, Real Salt Lake struggled to mount a comeback despite Arango’s introduction. Houston’s goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell was crucial in maintaining the clean sheet, making several key saves to keep the score at 3-0.

“I don’t necessarily think it was a 3-0 game...we were just really efficient” said Olsen.

For Salt Lake, the result was a bitter pill to swallow. Their inability to match their previous tournament success and the impact of Arango’s suspension weighed heavily on their campaign. As they reflect on what might have been, Houston Dynamo marches on, buoyed by Herrera’s brilliance and a newfound belief in their potential to go further in this year’s Leagues Cup. Houston aims to surpass last year’s performance, where they bowed out in the Round of 16 against Charlotte FC.
