MATCH RECAP: Charlotte shuts out Atlas to end their hopes of advancing

By Erick De La Rosa

Atlas Leagues Cup 2026 campaign came to an early end after falling 2-0 to Charlotte on Friday night, a result that officially eliminated the Liga MX side from quarterfinal contention. Second-half goals from substitutes Liel Abada and Tyger Smalls proved decisive as Charlotte capitalized on its late chances to secure all three points.

The match remained scoreless for much of the evening, with Atlas frustrating the hosts through a disciplined defensive performance and several outstanding saves from goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. However, Charlotte's changes off the bench ultimately made the difference. Abada broke the deadlock in the 78th minute after a costly turnover in Atlas' defensive third, and deep into stoppage time, Smalls sealed the victory by finishing off a counterattack into an empty net.

With consecutive victories to open the tournament, Charlotte has taken a major step toward the knockout stage and will look to complete a perfect Phase One campaign when it faces Pachuca on the final matchday.

For Atlas, it was a tournament to forget. Hernán Crespo's side managed just one goal while conceding five across its two matches, and despite showing moments of defensive resilience, the Rojinegros lacked the attacking edge needed to compete with two of the Eastern Conference's top clubs. The early elimination marks a disappointing end to Atlas' Leagues Cup campaign, leaving the club to play only for pride in its final Phase One match.
