León entered the match in a strong position to advance after winning its first two Leagues Cup matches. Inter Miami, however, needed a victory in regulation to keep its hopes alive, with qualification then depending on other results and goal difference. That sense of urgency was evident from the opening whistle.
Needing goals and all three points, Inter Miami pushed forward throughout the first half, while León remained compact defensively, knowing that avoiding a regulation loss could be enough to secure a place in the Quarterfinals.
Ian Fray was a constant threat down the right flank and created multiple opportunities in a busy first half for León goalkeeper Óscar García. After a long ball from Rodrigo De Paul, Fray delivered a cutback for Daniel Pinter, who opened the scoring for Inter Miami late in the first half. León struggled to respond and went into halftime without registering a shot on target.
Lionel Messi entered the match to start the second half, but León also turned to Diber Cambindo. The move quickly paid off, as Cambindo led an early counterattack and found Daniel Arcila for the equalizer. Just two minutes later, Yannick Bright connected with a corner inside the box to restore Inter Miami’s lead.
The qualification scenario still appeared to favor León, but the Mexican side refused to settle. Another halftime substitution made an impact when Juan Domínguez leveled the match with a magnificent strike from inside the box. Inter Miami’s defense struggled to contain a rejuvenated León attack, and Arcila eventually completed the comeback with a powerful finish following another assist from Cambindo.
León’s second-half comeback eliminated Inter Miami and sent the Mexican side into the Quarterfinals with a perfect Phase One record, having defeated all three of its MLS opponents.
