Antoine Griezmann eager for Leagues Cup challenge after fulfilling lifelong MLS dream

When Antoine Griezmann was officially introduced as the newest star of Orlando City SC, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion spoke less about the past and more about the opportunity that lies ahead.

After spending more than a decade starring in Europe, Griezmann revealed that playing in Major League Soccer had been a dream since he was 18 years old. Now, with that goal fulfilled, another challenge immediately awaits: Leagues Cup 2026.

Tickets are currently available and fans are encouraged to visit leaguescup.com/tickets or their local club websites for details.

Beginning August 4, the French legend will make his first appearance in North America's premier club competition, where Orlando City will face Liga MX opposition in a tournament that offers exactly the type of international competition Griezmann has long admired.

A Dream Years in the Making

During his introductory press conference, Griezmann explained that his move to Orlando was never about simply ending his career in a different league.

"Since I was 18, it was my dream to come to MLS."

He added that he wanted to arrive while still feeling physically and mentally capable of performing at the highest level, believing now was the perfect moment to begin this new chapter.

The French forward also credited former teammate and friend Carlos Vela as one of the biggest inspirations behind his MLS move.

"Everything Carlos Vela did with LAFC made me want to do the same. He's been an incredible player for MLS and for his club. Hopefully I can get close to that level."

Vela's success helped convince Griezmann that MLS was the right destination, and now he hopes to build a similar legacy in Orlando.

Leagues Cup Provides the Perfect Introduction

Griezmann won't have to wait long for his first taste of MLS-Liga MX competition.

Orlando City opens its Leagues Cup 2026 campaign on August 4, giving the French international an immediate opportunity to test himself against some of Mexico's biggest clubs in one of the continent's premier tournaments.

Speaking about the competition, Griezmann welcomed the challenge.

"It will be an honor to face Mexican teams in this competition, and hopefully we can bring joy to our fans."

His comments reflect one of Leagues Cup's unique attractions: the opportunity for MLS and Liga MX clubs to meet in meaningful, high-stakes matches throughout the tournament.

Griezmann won't enter Leagues Cup as an unknown to Orlando supporters. In his first appearance wearing the Lions' jersey, the French forward wasted little time making an impression, scoring the opening goal and adding an assist in a 6-0 friendly victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies Wednesday night.

Trophy Ambitions from Day One

Griezmann made it clear that his expectations in Orlando go beyond simply enjoying a new experience.

"My goal is to win a trophy and make the whole city happy."

Those ambitions align perfectly with Leagues Cup, where every match carries added significance. In addition to regional bragging rights between MLS and Liga MX, the tournament awards three qualification spots to the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.

For Orlando City, Griezmann's arrival adds one of the most accomplished players in world soccer to a squad aiming to make a deep run this summer.
