Leagues Cup

Things have tightened at the top as we near the close of the 2023 Clausura. Monterrey has held onto their lead, but from second to seventh place only three points separate six teams. Among Matchday 11’s notable results were a win for América over Tigres and Cruz Azul beating Pumas. Here’s our recap of the round:

Atlético de San Luis 2-0 Querétaro After five games without a win, the hosts had a great evening. Dieter Villalpando and Vitinho gave them the win at home as they moved up to twelfth place on 12 points.

Puebla 1-0 Chivas It was a very entertaining match at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc. La Franja earned a narrow victory thanks to a goal by Gustavo Ferrareis and managed to contain the Rojiblancos’ attacks to preserve the lead. El Rebaño Sagrado had not lost since Matchday 3 and had been on four wins in a row; now they must turn their thoughts to Saturday’s Clásico Nacional against América.

Atlas 0-1 Leon Los Rojinegros continue to struggle in the 2023 Clausura. Here, they were helpless as the visitors earned a key victory in their chase for a place in the Liguilla with a goal from outside the area by Víctor Dávila; they’re now in seventh place with 18 points.

Cruz Azul 1-0 Pumas After the tough defeat for La Máquina last weekend against Mazatlán, they managed to recover with a fairly important victory that moved them into ninth place overall. Alonso Escoboza scored the game’s only goal, a fine volley, to seal the victory.

Tigres 0-2 America Things at the top of the table are very tight. Las Águilas went to the Universitario and saw their undefeated run come to an end as goals from Jonathan Rodríguez and Leonardo Suárez moved the visitors into fifth place.

Toluca 4-1 Mazatlan Los Diablos Rojos recovered from a defeat in the last round to impress against the Sinaloans with goals from Carlos González, Edgar López, Maximiliano Araújo and Camilo Sanvezzo. Nicolás Benedetti scored a consolation goal for Mazatlán.

Pachuca 1-2 Monterrey This was a duel between two of the best teams in this tournament. Here though, Rayados continued to show why they are top and in great form. Jesús Gallardo and Jordi Cortizo scored for the visitors, while Marino Hinestroza scored for Los Tuzos.

Santos 3-2 Xolos It was quite an entertaining game that took place in Torreón. Los Guerreros managed to edge past Tijuana in convincing fashion. Javier Correa (twice) and Matheus Dória scored for Santos, while Alexis Canelo and Lucas Rodríguez scored for Tijuana.

Juarez 1-1 Necaxa Both teams arrived with Liguilla aspirations, but a tie did not help either much. Édgar Méndez scored the goal for Rayos, while Tomás Martín Molina equalized for Juarez.
