Here is our recap of Matchday 1 in Liga MX, in which Chivas and Pumas recorded results that will have thrilled their fans.
Necaxa 2-3 Atletico San Luis
Andrés Lillini took charge of his first game as coach of the Rayos and, although they were close to a draw, Atlético San Luis had a very outstanding second half to win. Los Potosinos took the 2-3 victory with goals from Juan Manuel Sanabria, Léo Bonatini and Sabin Merino.
America 0-0 Queretaro
Las Águilas made their debut in the 2023 Clausura and had some difficulties breaking down their opponent. However, Óscar Jiménez stood out in the goal for the Azulcremas and had a good performance. Queretaro had several chances, but they never managed to make them count and they left with a scoreless draw.
Monterrey 0-1 Chivas
El Rebaño Sagrado started the 2023 Clausura on the right foot with an away victory in one of the most challenging places to go in all of Liga MX. Alexis Vega scored a great goal early in the second half and that was enough for Guadalajara, although they were saved by a missed penalty from Germán Berterame.
Pumas 2-1 Juarez
Los Fronterizos were close to making it a bitter start to the season for the hosts, who came from behind to win. Alan Medina scored the game's first goal on 29', but Pumas did everything to win and in the last 15 minutes of the game they came back and turned it around with goals from Toto Salvio and Juan Ignacio Dinenno from the penalty spot.
Santos 0-3 Tigres
One of the most powerful attacks in Liga MX made a good start to the 2023 Clausura. Diego Cocca's side had no problems and recorded a resounding 3-0 win with goals from Diego Reyes, André-Pierre Gignac and Luis Quiñones.
Xolos 1-1 Cruz Azul
La Máquina put on a great display on their visit to Tijuana. Although the game was challenging for them at the end of the first half due to a penalty scored by Lisandro López, they did not stop pushing and managed to equalize through Charly Rodríguez on 83'. They still had a couple of more dangerous chances, but they didn't get the second goal that they needed.
Pachuca 5-1 Puebla
It was an impressive debut for the current champions of Liga MX. Los Tuzos went up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes with goals from Luis Chávez and Nico Ibáñez. Martín Barragán gave Puebla hope with a penalty at the end of the first half, but López, Álvarez and Ibañez again made it 5-1 in less than 10 minutes to secure the three points.
Matches between Atlas and Toluca and Mazatlan and León will be played at a future date.
