Leagues Cup

With the Liga MX Apertura season racing to a close and the MLS playoff race reaching fever pitch, we take a last look at how the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase participants did over the last week, from a chance for a trophy for Atlas FC to the continuation of an amazing streak on the part of Club América. Catch up on their performances and then tune in this Wednesday and Thursday for the exciting conclusion of the Showcase.

Club América continued their incredible run at the top of the 2022 Apertura with a thrilling three-all draw at home to Santos Laguna on Tuesday, with Fede Viñas scoring in the seventh minute of stoppage time to earn the hosts a point. On Saturday, the Águilas were at home again, taking on Chivas in El Súper Clásico and got another goal from Henry Martín to record an important 2-1 win that kept them a point ahead of Monterrey before they head to Nashville to kick off the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase.

It was a tougher week for their beaten opponents, Chivas, though. While the loss to in-form América was a difficult defeat, the team had also been beaten at home by Tigres on Tuesday. Still in the mix for the Liguilla with one match to play, Ricardo Cadena's side will finish the Liga MX season on October 1 with a trip to Cruz Azul. But before that Chivas will be stateside to face FC Cincinnati on Wednesday night at TQL Stadium in the second of the evening’s two matches.

Finally, Atlas FC were in action on Wednesday night in New York, taking on New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Before making their trip to Salt Lake City on Thursday evening, the Liga MX Bicampeón took on the MLS side in the 2022 Campeones Cup, and unfortunately lost, 2-0. The score would be the same for the Guadalajara side tomorrow, as they headed north to take on Monterrey, who are battling at the top of the table.

It was also a pair of losses for Atlas’ opponent on Thursday, Real Salt Lake, who lost 3-0 away to Austin FC on Wednesday. They were back in action on Saturday, hosting fellow 2022 Leagues Cup participant FC Cincinnati, but a brace from Brenner saw the Orange and Blue run out 2-1 winners. The result was important for the visitors’ playoff chances as it kept them three points clear of Columbus in eighth before they take on Chivas on Wednesday night.

Nashville SC played just one match this week, getting yet another goal from in-form Hany Mukhtar as they drew one-all against the Western Conference’s second place side. Next up will be their Leagues Cup Showcase match against América before their last two matches of the season following the international break.

Finally, MLS’ two Los Angeles sides were also in action — the Galaxy split a pair of matches in losing 3-0 in Vancouver before rebounding with a 4-1 home win over Colorado Rapids on Saturday thanks to a brace from Gastón Brugman as the team push to confirm a playoff place with just three matches to play. LAFC, meanwhile, drew away to Minnesota United before a 3-1 win at home to Houston Dynamo helped them seal the regular season Western Conference title, with Carlos Vela netting a brace from the penalty spot.
