Leagues Cup

With just over two weeks to go until the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase concludes, here’s how our eight participants got on this weekend. From a streaking Club América to a Chicharito double in Los Angeles, there were plenty of goals on both sides of the border:

Club América have now won an incredible seven straight matches in Liga MX. This run has taken them to the top of the Apertura, level on points with Monterrey, but with a game in hand. Their latest success came on Saturday as they hosted a Tigres side who have also had a strong start to the season — after André-Pierre Gignac cancelled out Jonathan Rodriguez’s opener early in the first half, the hosts put the pressure on, and were able to take the lead with an own goal on the stroke of halftime. Next up are matches against San Luis and Necaxa before a big clash with fellow Leagues Cup Showcase participants Chivas on the 17th!

Elsewhere in Liga MX, Chivas continued their push for a place in the Liguilla with a hard-earned scoreless draw away to Toluca. Next up are matches against Tijuana and Puebla before the team make the trip to Cincinnati on September 22. Atlas also played out a nil-nil at home to Pumas, and despite getting only a point from the encounter, they’re still just three points off the Liguilla places ahead taking on Mazatlán and San Luis this week.

In MLS, Nashville SC have showed Club América that they’re not the only ones with a winning streak! In a huge match against second place Austin FC on Saturday, the hosts rode a brace from top scorer Hany Mukhtar to a 3-0 win. On the back of Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Colorado Rapids, Nashville have now won four straight and are just a point behind third place Dallas FC. Nashville will host LA Galaxy on Saturday in a big match involving two Western Conference playoff contenders.

On Saturday in Utah, two of our Leagues Cup Showcase sides squared off, and they were coming into the match on top form. Real Salt Lake had beaten Minnesota United to move within two points of the Loons in midweek, while LAFC remained top of the Western Conference despite having lost to Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. With new signing Denis Bouanga making a first start, the visitors ran out 2-0 winners to remain nine points clear of Austin, while Real Salt Lake stayed sixth ahead of Saturday’s home match against DC United.

For LA Galaxy, it was all about the drama this week. Greg Vanney’s side played out a pair of two-all draws, the first coming thanks to a last-minute equalizer from Riqui Puig in Toronto on Wednesday. Then, after opening the scoring in the fourth minute, Chicharito ended it in the 88th, scoring from the spot against Sporting KC to level the score. Now on 14 goals for the season, the Mexico international has his team within striking distance of the playoffs, three points behind Portland, but with two games in hand.

Finally, FC Cincinnati moved level on points with New England Revolution after a classy 2-0 win at home to Charlotte FC. Luciano Acosta was the man of the match with a goal and his league-leading eleventh assist ahead of Wednesday’s trip to face defending MLS Cup champions New York City FC. A home match with San José is on the books for next weekend, as just six matches remain for the Orange and Blue to seal a post-season place.
