Leagues Cup

In the last round of Liga MX and MLS action before the League Cup Showcase kicks off with a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at SoFi Stadium, here’s a look back at how all eight of our 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase sides fared over the last week.

Chivas were the busiest of all of our teams, playing two matches in Liga MX. Both ended in draws for the Rojiblanco, the first a two-all draw away to Querétaro, and the second a scoreless tie at home to Pachuca. Heading into Wednesday’s match against LA Galaxy, Chivas have lost just once in their last six Liga MX matches, and will be a tough task for the hosts.

The other Liga MX side in action on Wednesday, Club América, also played two matches this week. The first was a two-all friendly draw against Real Madrid at San Francisco’s Oracle park, before the Aguilas headed north to take on Club Léon, where a late, late penalty for the ten-man hosts saw América, who had a double from Henry Martín, fall 3-2.

Finally, Atlas, who will take on Real Salt Lake on September 22, lost both of their Liga MX matches, 1-2 at home to Club Tijuana and 1-0 away to Santos.

Our two “home teams” for Wednesday, LAFC and LA Galaxy, were also busy. Steve Cherundolo’s conference-leading side took on Seattle Sounders Friday night, and came from a goal down thanks to goals from Carlos Vela and Kwadwo Opoku to win, 2-1. The Galaxy were on the road against Dallas FC, but couldn’t reply to an early goal from the hosts, losing 1-0.

Nashville SC earned a vital point in the Western Conference playoff race, drawing one-all at home to Vancouver Whitecaps. Real Salt Lake also kept themselves in contention, getting a stoppage time equalizer from Jefferson Savarino to draw two-all away to San José Earthquakes on Saturday.

Finally, FC Cincinnati played what was easily the weekend’s most thrilling match, a four-all draw away to Inter Miami. Despite a brace each from Brenner and Brandon Vazquez, a last-minute goal from the hosts would level the score, but a point is enough for the Orange and Blue to stay in the playoff positions.
