With just over a week to go until we kick off the Leagues Cup Showcase on August 3 at SoFi Stadium, we had all eight of our teams in action across Major League Soccer and Liga MX, with some of our Mexican teams also taking on some big-name European opponents in friendlies.
The current Western Conference leaders, LAFC continued their three-match winning streak as they headed to Sporting Kansas City, getting a 2-0 win over the hosts. Gareth Bale came off the bench and got his first goal for the club, scoring seven minutes from time, after leading scorer Cristian Arango had found the net just after halftime.
It was also a win for fellow Showcase hosts LA Galaxy, as they beat visiting Atlanta United, 2-0, to move back into the playoff positions thanks to goals from Kévin Cabral and Dejan Joveljić. Real Salt Lake had a tougher go of it, as Saturday saw them fall to visiting Dallas FC, 1-0, in a matchup of two sides who are battling hard to finish in the top seven.
Finally, two teams who will be hosting matches in September, Nashville SC and FC Cincinnati, drew one-all at TQL Stadium. New signing Shaq Moore stayed on the bench for the visitors, who saw Teal Bunbury’s early goal canceled out by Brandon Vazquez scoring for the third time in four matches.
In Mexico, Atlas lost 2-0 away to Tigres, continuing what was been a difficult start to the Apertura for La Furia ahead of a mid-week round of matches in Liga MX. Chivas hosted Léon last Wednesday, and were able to earn a scoreless draw on Matchday 4, despite playing for nearly thirty minutes with ten men against Club Léon. The team then traveled to Las Vegas, where they lost 2-0 to Juventus at Allegiant Stadium in an international friendly.
Club América also played two matches over the course of the last week, as they, like Chivas took on a European side in addition to a Liga MX match. At NRG Stadium, they fell to a pair of Kevin de Bruyne goals against Manchester City, before taking on Los Xolos in Tijuana, with the hosts getting the better of the Águilas, 2-0.
