NEW YORK AND MEXICO CITY (July 13, 2021) – Today, Major League Soccer (MLS) and LIGA MX announced that Allegiant Stadium and the City of Las Vegas will host the 2021 and 2022 finals of Leagues Cup. A knockout tournament which features teams from both MLS and the Mexican top flight, Leagues Cup fosters the growing rivalry between the two leagues while delivering matches of the highest quality to fans across North America.
The 2021 edition of Leagues Cup will feature Tigres, Pumas, Club León and Santos Laguna from LIGA MX, while Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City SC, Seattle Sounders FC and New York City FC will represent MLS.
One point to consider is that, if Club León is crowned Campeón de Campeones 2020-2021 of LIGA MX (to be played on July 18 vs. Cruz Azul), Chivas would take León's spot as it is the next best-placed Club in the standings of the 2020-2021 season.
The final will be played at the Allegiant Stadium, on Wednesday, September 22 at 10:00 pm ET (ESPN2, UniMas, TUDN, TSN and TVA Sports). For more information on ticket sales visit www.LeaguesCup.com and sign up to receive updates.
Leagues Cup and Campeones Cup are part of a strategic alliance between the two most important soccer leagues in North America. This alliance goes beyond rivalry on the pitch — it focuses on strengthening the sport’s presence throughout the region, both through mutual collaboration and through sharing best practices to the benefit of the local communities for both leagues.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber mentioned: “As the partnership between MLS and LIGA MX continues to grow in the coming years and demonstrate what is possible between our two leagues, the passionate soccer market of Las Vegas is the perfect host for the Final of Leagues Cup in 2021 and 2022”.
While Mikel Arriola, LIGA MX Executive President, stated: “For LIGA MX, Leagues Cup represents a very important step in our internationalization project. Sports competition against MLS and the possibility of reaching our great fans in the United States are a great opportunity for our institution and our Clubs, furthermore, the fact that the city of Las Vegas and its spectacular new stadium are hosting the Grand Final is an extra motivation to fight on the pitch for a chance to be in the championship game of Leagues Cup”.
“We are thrilled to announce Allegiant Stadium as the home venue for the Leagues Cup Final,” said Raiders President Marc Badain. “With the Gold Cup Final in August and now the Leagues Cup Final in September, top-flight international soccer celebrations are among the signature events to be held here in the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World.”
“We’re delighted to welcome the Leagues Cup Final back to the Sports Capital of the World both this year and next year,” said Steve Hill, CEO/president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “Welcoming an event of this caliber is incredibly exciting for the destination, and we look forward to showing the teams and their fans the Only-in-Vegas experience they’ve come to expect.”
Lance Evans, MGM Resorts' Senior Vice President of Sports, said, “Leagues Cup will be a great addition to the destination's fall sports programming. As the leader in the hospitality industry, we are focused on creating memorable guest experiences and anticipate a tremendous response from soccer fans from around the world."
With that in mind, MLS and Liga MX have today confirmed that, in concert with the 2021 Leagues Cup final, they will jointly carry out a community service project in Las Vegas in order to fulfill one of the pillars of their alliance. Details regarding this project will be announced in the near future.
Leagues Cup is proudly sponsored by BODYARMOR, MGM Resorts International and Procter & Gamble and it will be broadcast on Univision and ESPN networks and digital platforms in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Televisa and TUDN platforms in Mexico.
