NEW YORK AND MEXICO CITY (July 7, 2021) – Today, Liga MX and MLS (Major League Soccer) have officially announced the participants and the schedule for the 2021 Leagues Cup, a tournament to fuel the rivalry between the two leagues and offer matches of the highest quality for soccer fans across North America.
Tigres, Pumas, León, and Santos are set to join the 2021 edition of the competition as they are the four best-placed teams in the standings of the 2020-2021 season of Liga MX, this without considering Clubs classified for the Concacaf Champions League.
One point to consider is that, if Club León is crowned Campeón de Campeones 2020-2021 of LIGA MX (to be played on July 18 vs. Cruz Azul), Chivas would take León's spot as it is the next best-placed Club in the standings of the 2020-2021 season.
As announced in March, MLS teams are Orlando City SC, New York City FC, Seattle Sounders, and Sporting Kansas City, as they are the top two teams from each conference based on the 2020 MLS regular season and not being scheduled to participate in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.
Leagues Cup is a single-elimination competition that pits teams from Liga MX against opponents from MLS. The 2021 edition of Leagues Cup will start on Tuesday, August 10 and the quarterfinal matches will run through Thursday, August 12. The semifinals will be played on September 14 and/or 15, while the final is scheduled for September 22 at a neutral site.
It is important to note that the 2021 Leagues Cup will be played entirely in the United States — the MLS teams (Orlando City SC, New York City FC, Seattle Sounders and Sporting Kansas City) will each host a team from Liga MX (Pumas, Tigres, Santos Laguna and Club León) in the quarterfinals, which will be contested over one leg.
Concacaf have recently announced that beginning in 2023, the Leagues Cup winner will be rewarded with a spot in the Concacaf Champions League, which will bring greater relevance to the tournament as well as fostering the nascent rivalry between the two leagues.
Leagues Cup, sponsored by BODYARMOR, MGM Resorts International and Procter & Gamble, will be broadcast on Univision and ESPN networks and digital platforms in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Televisa and TUDN platforms in Mexico.
