It was Agustin Marchesin’s decision to give Giovani dos Santos the chance to kick the winning penalty, as America’s goalkeeper wanted his new teammate to be the decisive factor in Wednesday's Leagues Cup quarterfinal triumph over the Houston Dynamo.
“If we look back, in the last match (Campeon de Campeones), Marchesin gave us the win [in PKs]. He told me that he wanted me to score the winning goal, and in the end, I did it,” said Giovani after the Aguilas booked their ticket to the Leagues Cup semifinal after a 6-5 penalty shootout win, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Gio made his America debut against Houston, a moment the Mexican international was craving since joining the club.
“I haven't been that nervous in a while. Honestly, I was very motivated; it was a pleasure to be able to play some minutes. I have the confidence to keep going forward and contribute to this group”, Giovani said.
